It was soon discovered that lead-free products with ImmAg surface finish will creep corrode in high sulfur environments (ISA Class G2 or higher).
Echoing the study by Rockwell, Hewlett Packard (Mazurkiewicz 2006) documented several case studies where creep corrosion of ImmAg finish caused failures of computer systems in high sulfur environments.
The reason for the dramatic increase in corrosion failures due to the use of ImmAg involves the propensity of silver and copper to react with sulfur.
With a majority of control systems, manufacturers opting to use the ImmAg process for their PCBs and other electrical components, and the fact that silver is much more sensitive to lower levels of corrosive gases, we have already seen increased concerns over equipment reliability.
