Niles, who is head of the Music Department at the Institute of Papua New Guinea Studies (IPNGS), spent almost three years (1993-96) researching Zahn's work: undertaking archival searches in Germany and Papua New Guinea (PNG), interviewing Zahn's descendants and relatives, and carrying out fieldwork in the Jabem and Bukawac areas among people who remembered missionary Zahn.
With the few resources available to him at IPNGS, Niles has researched, edited and prepared for publication the translation of the Hamburg manuscript and, in addition to the introductory essay, has provided numerous informative footnotes and other material that explicate Zahn's text.
Niles, Holzknecht, the IPNGS, and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria (Neuendettelsau) which supported both the translation and publication, are to be congratulated on the production of this book, the fourth in the series Apwitihire: Studies in Papua New Guinea Musics.
