You now could have an altimeter error crossing the fix of a few hundred feet and you could get busted based on your indicated altitude.
Indicated altitude is a way to say where you are compared to other airplanes.
But sometimes the difference between the indicated altitude and the desired altitude agl is too great.
Since the effects of temperature can't be corrected by the altimeter, when we fly at a constant indicated altitude with a given altimeter setting, we are actually flying at a constant pressure level, rather than a constant true height above sea level.
The potential problem arises because stepdown fix altitudes are published using indicated altitudes that vary with temperature, but altitudes along a glideslope are unaffected by temperature.
The GPS geometry for calculating altitude is not very good, but I was pleasantly surprised by how closely it shadows both the pressure and indicated altitude tracks.
I say "nominally" because on days warmer than ISA conditions, the indicated altitude following the GS will be even lower--in some cases more than 100 feet lower.
Checking the displayed pressure against both the indicated altitude and what we know about area weather is a good place to start when verifying the instrument's accuracy.
