Diagnosis of necrotic enterocolitis associated with PCV2 should be based on the detection of PCV2 antigen or DNA in necrotic areas, since giant cells and intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies (typical of PCV2 infection) may not be present in microscopical lesions.
Additionally, nuclear debris, macrophages (Figure, panel A), and intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies (Figure, panel B) were observed in the lymphoid nodules.
Histologically, the skin lesions showed eosinophilic granular intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies in basal and spinous layers of epidermis, compatible with poxvirus infection; superficial ulceration and extensive intraepidermal abscesses were also found.
Large eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies (Bollinger bodies) were also seen (Fig 3).
A nonpurulent encephalitis with syncitial cells and intranuclear inclusion bodies, intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies, or both, were detected in 6 whales from which neurologic tissues were analyzed microscopically.
Histopathologic examination of the resected tissue revealed eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies associated with a heavy infiltration of heterophils, lymphocytes, and fewer plasma cells.
Scattered intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies were observed in the spleen (Figure B inset).
Eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies, characteristic of canine distemper, were found in the epithelium of lung, kidney, intestine, and urinary bladder (Figure 1).
