Table 1 presents the 2010 and 2014 survey results obtained from Japanese overseas subsidiaries concerning the difficulties in using respective currencies as invoice currency. First, the second column shows that the US dollar was the most used as an invoice currency, with 86% and 83.9% of responding firms using it in the 2010 and 2014 surveys, respectively, while the yen was the second most used currency.
According to Chart 2, which classifies respondents only in China to the question as to whether subsidiaries currently have any transactions denominated in the yuan, "Manufacturing subsidiaries" are more likely to use the yuan as an invoice currency than "Wholesale trade subsidiaries".
Finally, we investigated the data on choice of invoice currency, focusing on production subsidiaries in Asia (all Asian countries), China, and the ASEAN-6 countries.
The left-hand side of Table 5 shows the invoice currency share in imports of intermediate inputs from Japan.
Among the countries outside the eurozone, new EU member states have intensified the use of the euro as invoice currency. It was expected that the new EU members would make transactions in euros, given that the currency would be used in the future in these countries.
dollar was used as the invoice currency for more than half of world exports, down only slightly from 1980, as shown in Table 3.
In addition, the more accepted a currency is for other transactions, the more likely it is to be used as an invoice currency Clearly these two factors are mutually supportive.
As noted above, the use of the dollar as an invoice currency was prompted by the lack of convertibility of most other currencies in the 1950s.
The mere creation of the euro as a currency should provide ample incentive for its use as an invoice currency. Replacing the currencies of 12 countries with a single currency reduces the transaction costs involved in currency exchanges.
The model is designed to contrast the contribution of macroeconomic variability with that of industry-specific features in the selection of an invoice currency. The authors show that producers in industries with high demand elasticities are more likely than producers in other industries to display herding in their choice of currency.
(3) Goldberg and Tille (2008) examine the relationship between invoice currency, the degree of product heterogeneity, and various characteristics of the exporting and destination countries.
