The Iron Horse Bicycle Classic is staged annually in the small town of Durango in the south-west of Colorado and came out of a bet in 1971 between brothers Tom and Jim Mayer - one a cycling enthusiast, the other a railway brakeman - as to which was faster, bike or train, to the mining town of Silverton.
A year later, he got a group of cyclists together to race against a steam train from the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad - and the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic was born.
