Through our association office, JCEA staff and leaders, including our organizing cadre and speakers bureau, took the lead coordinating the development and implementation of a campaign structure and plan.
In addition to the JCEA's efforts, strong teacher leaders stepped up to organize their natural constituency groups.
Since elementary band was on the cut list, band teacher and JCEA activist Amy Woodley stepped forward to organize her colleagues and parents.
groups some 400 trading houses and corporations doing business in China.
Among the Columbine staff are some of my own high school friends, former colleagues, and dozens of JCEA members I know well.
Within the first 24 hours, the JCEA office received letters and faxes from Maine to Washington, Israel to Russia.
And the collective efforts of our superintendent, school board, administration, and all JCEA members have been nothing short of inspirational.
JCEA's members--teachers, teachers' aides, and non-instructional supervisors--stayed solid in the face of a $100,000-per-day fine against their union and threats of a mass firing.
"We were 3,500 strong, singing songs of union solidarity and being applauded by community members," says JCEA activist Gerry Mattaliano.
JCEA pursued both grievances, the first one successfully--that teacher was placed in the position.
But when JCEA tried to bring the second grievance to arbitration, the school district got a district court to rule that once a grievance had been resolved, the Association could not advocate for the interest of the other teacher on the same issue.
With Colorado Education Association attorneys arguing the case for arbitration, JCEA won in the Colorado appellate court an in the Colorado Supreme Court when the school district appealed the case there.
