The Jewish Historical Society of England (JHSE) was founded in 1893, and the first 'Resettlement Day' was held in 1894.
Henriques, an early president of the JHSE, protested in 1905 that 'The theory of readmission itself rests upon no sufficient evidence, and the statements which are put forward as corroborating it are either wholly irrelevant or absolutely inconsistent with it.' But such vestiges of scepticism have long since vanished.
