The president of the AJC, Louis Marshall, published several appeals in Yiddish dailies, warning of "an outbreak of antisemitism which was thought impossible in this country," and thundering that "the American people would be justly agitated against those who proved to be enemies of our liberty and democracy." Extending the danger also to Jews in Europe, Marshall claimed, "Every vote for Hillquit means a vote for the Kaiser and for the reinstatement of the Tsar." Democrat Samuel Untermyer, who headed the JLAP, pleaded with an audience of Bronx Jews to prevent "the catastrophe to our race" that Hillquit's election would bring.
