It was envisioned that the forces employed would be drawn from a Joint Rapid Deployment Force (JRDF) that would become operational on 1 August 1996 and would be designed to be able to fulfill a wide range of combat or non-combat missions, mounted nationally or as part of any contribution to operations mounted by NATO, the European Union, or the United Nations.
To reflect the earlier introduction of the JRDF, AOCinC STC had previously, on 1 April 1998, tasked UK CAOC to provide, at 48 hours' notice (R1), the core air C2 element of a deployable Joint Force Air Component Headquarters (JFACHQ) for JRDF operations.
Some 150 staff and their families raised more than pounds 12, 000 in the JRDF walk in Croxteth Park in September and the plant's charity team organised events including a dinner dance, golf open and Welsh mountain walk.
