Jamaica's production of bauxite and alumina increased 6.1% in 2002 over 2001 and production in the first six months of this year also rose strongly, the Jamaica Bauxite Institute
said, reports Reuters (July 28, 2003).
Dennis Morrison, Senior Director of Economics and Projects at the Jamaica Bauxite Institute
(JBI), said: "There is still a large gap to be filled but this contract was helpful in terms of foreign exchange earnings and managing the cost of the operations." The bauxite/alumina sector is a major foreign exchange earner for the Jamaica economy, providing net earnings of US$316.4 million in 1999.
The Jamaica Bauxite Institute
(JBI) and Alcoa said that talks to be held in early 2002 should lead to a 25% expansion at the 1 million-ton-per-year Jamalco alumina refinery in Halse Hall, in the parish of Clarendon.
