Internal jugular vein ligation was originally recommended in the preantibiotic era as a way to prevent septic emboli and thrombus extension, but it is now reserved for rare cases of thrombus extension, infection and thrombosis of the internal jugular vein, and persistent septicemia and pulmonary complications despite initial medical and surgical management.
Our study group was made up of 12 patients--all women, aged 27 to 61 years (mean: 40 [+ or -] 6.1)--who had been diagnosed with venous pulsatile tinnitus and who were treated with jugular vein ligation. Follow-up had been conducted by telephone interviews for 1 to 6 years postoperatively to assess tinnitus status over the long term.
The therapeutic role of internal jugular vein ligation and/or anticoagulation is subject to debate.
