What is interesting about this case is that both the Ktunaxa and the Shuswap Indian Band were, at one time, represented by the Ktunaxa/Kinbasket Tribal Council but, in 2005, the Shuswap Indian Band withdrew from that Tribal Council and joined the Shuswap Nation Tribal Council.
In 1996, the Ktunaxa/Kinbasket Tribal Council (KKTC) sought to designate St Eugene as a site of "national architectural historic significance" and subsequently, after this application was rejected, as a site of "national historic significance." The kktc made these applications in the belief that that designation would help attract outside investment and also in order to receive government funding from the National Cost-Sharing Program (Johnson 577).
The mission was closed in 1970, and the building has remained unused since, except for a short period in the early 1980s, when two rooms were used for administration offices by the Ktunaxa/Kinbasket Tribal Council.
