Kempe was exactly the type of woman Hoccleve had in mind when, in his 1415 "Address to Sir John Oldcastle," he railed against "lewde calates" who, forgetting their proper roles in society, "wole argumentes make in holy writ." (18) We learn from Kempe's Book that she had visited Lady Westmorland between 1415 and 1417, and that the countess was "wel plesyd" with her and "lykyd wel [her] wordys." (19) It was also rumored--a charge Kempe denied--that she had encouraged Lady Westmorland's daughter to leave her husband.
