The Medill Local News Initiative
at Northwestern analyzed 13 terabytes of subscriber and readership data from the Chicago Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle and Indianapolis Star, and found that how often a reader came back to a site was more important than how many stories they were reading per visit or how much time they were spending with each article.
The Northwestern University's Local News Initiative
is a two-year research and development project hoping to tell that story by providing a greater understanding of how individuals engage with local news and to find new approaches to bolster business models.
Local news initiatives
are blossoming online--with the rapid expansion of AOL's Patch, the launch of Allbritton Communications' Washington, D.C.-focused TBD, and the collaboration of The New York Times and New York University journalism students on the neighborhood-level Local East Village, to name a few.
Buoyed by its success with Globe West, the paper earlier this month launched two additional local news initiatives
that involved local zoning.
