Like Lewin, Mazzola points out that "the additive structure of the pitch module is the basis for thinking in pitch distances" (68), and he defines inversion as an interval-reversing operation.(9) (The two theorists also share a fondness for whimsical acronyms: Mazzola refers to "die Gruppe der Umkehrungen und Translationen," the TTO's, as "GUT," and to his "Mathematischen Musiktheorie" as "MaMuth"--that is, "mammoth.") But the difference is also clear.
Unless one subscribes to the philosophy of meaning that is crucial to this theory, one may conclude that the MaMuth, like the homonymous pachyderm, is impressive but not viable.
