This first GMLRS Alternative Warhead round coming off our Camden Operations production line represents another example of Lockheed Martins commitment to constantly evolve the
MLRS family of munitions to meet the ever-changing requirements of our customers.
The MLRS system now comprises the
MLRS Family of Munitions, the Army Tactical Missile (Atacms) Family of Munitions and two launchers, the original tracked M270 MLRS launcher and the newer wheeled M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (Himars).
It can be transported by C-130 Hercules aircraft, which can take off and land on relatively unimproved airfields, and it can fire all rockets and missiles in the current and future
MLRS family of munitions, said HIMARS Deputy Product Manager John Andrews from Redstone Arsenal, Ala.
The GMLRS rocket is the latest in the
MLRS family of munitions. Lockheed said the all-weather, precision-guided rocket provides increased accuracy, reducing the number of rockets necessary to defeat targets by 80 percent.
The GMLRS Unitary rocket is a spiral-development program that expands the
MLRS family of munitions and provides a unitary-warhead capability to the existing GMLRS configuration Objectives of the test, conducted May 6, included demonstrating guidance, control, fuzing, and detonation.
