This section is a favourite of Mudac director Chantal Prod'Hom, who says, "Alps-influenced design has not only promoted the image of Switzerland and tourism, but has inspired a wide gamut of signs, posters and sports equipment, not to mention the chalet style of architecture.
The current exhibition at mudac, devoted to the legendary Italian design firm Danese (last day: May 15) is filled with moments of instant recognition.
"I feel that we have a special link with Danese, which had its first show at the Museum of Decorative Arts (forerunner of mudac) in 1973," says Chantal Prod'Hom, curator and director.
Prod'Hom said that she met Jacqueline Vodoz and Bruno Danese right after the opening of mudac in 2000.
In its current incarnation, Maison Gaudard houses, in addition to mudac, the outstanding contemporary glass collection of Peter & Traudl Engelhorn, which takes over the top floor; the Jacques-Edouard Berger Collection of Egyptian, Chinese, Indian, Indonesian and Japanese art, exhibited in the basement; and the Swiss Confederation collection of jewellery and ceramics from the '50s to the present.
Prod'Hom, who has headed up mudac since its inception, was previously curator of the Asher Edelmann Foundation and Contemporary Art Museum in Puffy, which opened in 1991 and closed in 1995, and executive director of Fabrica, the contemporary communications arm of Benetton located in Treviso, Italy.
