When vectoring you for an approach or departure, the controller refers to either a Minimum Vectoring Altitude Chart (MVAC) or an En Route Minimum IFR Altitude (MIA) Chart to determine the lowest altitude that provides the required obstacle clearance (ROC).
First and foremost, MVAC sectors must be at or above the floor of controlled airspace.
Each MVAC or MIA sector must be 1000 feet above the highest obstacle in non-mountainous areas or 2000 feet above the highest terrain in mountainous areas.
