The comprehensive test battery included the California Verbal Learning Test, the Abstraction Inhibition and Working Memory Task, Digit Span and Matrix Reasoning, verbal fluency and vocabulary testing, and the Visual Object Learning Test.
For this we used the digit span and matrix reasoning tasks from the WASI (Wechsler, 1999).
Within the category of perceptual reasoning, the researchers saw the biggest differences in the subcategory of matrix reasoning -- when participants viewed two groups of symbols and had to find the one symbol missing from the other group.
This index is obtained by evaluating children with only six of the subtests (Vocabulary, Similarities, Comprehension, Block Design, Matrix Reasoning and Picture Concepts) avoiding the subtests that are part of the indexes of Working Memory and Processing Speed.
The Matrix Reasoning measures visual-perceptual organization and processing, attention to detail, reasoning, and concentration.
Total score is 133; (g) Matrix reasoning: Investigating visual information processing and abstract reasoning, with a total of 26 points; (h) Symbol search: Investigating attention and the speed of the cognitive process within a time-limit of 120 seconds.
Baseline cognitive assessments included estimations of current and premorbid intelligence using the Matrix Reasoning from the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale--III (Wechsler 1997) and the American National Adult Reading Test (ANART; Grober & Sliwinski 1991), respectively.
JS: These include the Progressive Matrices, Test of Nonverbal Intelligence-3, Leiter International Performance Scale-Revised, and some subtests from the Wechsler batteries like Block Design, Digit Span, and Matrix Reasoning.
Eleven of these subtests contribute to the Verbal and Performance IQ scores: Vocabulary, Comprehension, Similarities, Information, Arithmetic, and Digit Span contribute to the Verbal IQ score, and Block Design, Matrix Reasoning, Picture Arrangement, Picture Completion, and Digit-Symbol Coding contribute to the Performance IQ score (Symbol Search and Letter-Number Sequencing are not included in these scores).
