'Mediator Dei, although not belonging to the Sacred Liturgy, nevertheless is of special import and dignity, and may be considered in a certain way an addition to the liturgical cult,' he said.
(2) Pope Pius XII, 'Mediator Dei', verse 195, 20th November 1947, http://w2.vatican.va/content/piusxii/en/encyclicals/documents/hf_p -xii_enc_20111947_mediator-dei.html
The pope issued three encyclicals during the war: Divino Afflante Spiritu, on the study of Scripture; Mystici Corporis Christi, on the church as the mystical body of Christ; and Mediator Dei, on the liturgy.
Pope Pius XII's 1947 encyclical Mediator Dei and even the Second Vatican Council echoed many of these same concerns.
When Pius XII issued the encyclical Mediator Dei (1947), it was Bea who recognized the ecumenical significance of the stress on baptism as the means by which Christians became participants in the Mystical Body.
Thus in Mediator Dei, Pius XII asserts: "'each mystery brings its own special grace for our salvation"' (68).
Theology reflected liturgical practice, so that Pope Pius XII's 1947 encyclical Mediator Dei affirmed the prevailing understanding that the merely baptized did not participate in the "sacrifice." Catholics had internalized the message that Christ acted only through the priest.
The theology of the liturgy thus begins to stand forth grandly with what Pius XII's encyclical Mediator Dei of 1947 calls the culmen et fons (summit and source) of the liturgy, namely the Eucharistic celebration.
This phrase refers to a specific line of the teaching of the Roman Catholic magisterium from Pius XII's Mediator Dei (1947)(4) to John Paul II's Dominicae cenae (1980)(5) and the "Letter of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith on the Subject of the Role of the Ordained Ministry of the Episcopate and Presbyterate in the Celebration of the Eucharist" (1983).(6) The phrase "specific line of the teaching" refers to an aspect, often the dominant aspect, of contemporary magisterial teaching that seems to circumvent or pass over in silence (and thus, at least implicitly, to reverse) some of the important developments of Vatican II's Constitution on the Liturgy, Sacrosanctum concilium, and the subsequent liturgical reform in the Roman Catholic Church.(7)
Aquellos eran <<promissiva figura>>, del verdadero sacrificio <<quod ei (uni vero Deo) unus verus Sacerdos obtulit, Mediator Dei et hominurr>> (72).
