In 2016, around PS10,000 was raised by the Port of Tyne welfare fund and will be distributed to projects that support seafarers, via the Merchant Navy Welfare Board
- providing funding to welfare organisations that provide services to seafarers visiting the Tyne, including the Mission to Seafarers, Apostleship of the Sea and Fishermen's Mission - all of which are dependent entirely on charitable donations.
The service was led by Colin Worswick, chaplain to the Missions to Seafarers, Teesport with wreaths being laid by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire Col R Stewart, The Worshipful Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland Cllr B Briggs, Dr Ingledew President of the Redcar Royal Navy association, Capt K Parker of the Dormanstown/Redcar branch Merchant Navy association, Mr John Knight for the Chamber of shipping Teesport and Mrs V Collins for the Merchant Navy Welfare Board
, Cleveland Fire Brigade, Royal British Legion and TS Zetland cadets.
