We have described an apparatus that demonstrates that highly polarized [He.sup.3] gas, produced at a typical pressure of 0.25 kPa by metastability-exchange optical pumping, can be compressed to a pressure of 100 kPa using a compact, simple, inexpensive apparatus that is based on a modified commercial diaphragm pump.
