Early college high schools can also be referred to as "middle colleges" in some districts, says Cecilia Cunningham, executive director of the Middle College National Consortium in Long Island City, N.Y., an organization with 35 member schools.
The Middle College National Consortium (MCNC) is one of 11 intermediary organizations awarded funds by the Gates Foundation to establish Early College High Schools (ECHSs).
"I think our obligation is to ensure that we do everything we can to make sure our kids make it through the college pipeline," says Cece Cunningham, director of the Middle College National Consortium at LaGuardia Community College (N.Y.).
Through the work of the Middle College National Consortium and the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, we are learning about why early college students succeed in college.
It also receives technology support from the Middle College National Consortium, which gets funding from the Gates Foundation.

The Middle College National Consortium (MCNC) consists of a network of high schools across the nation, located on community college campuses, which provide historically underrepresented youth with access to college.
Even without outside funding, any school district can create an ECHS, says Cece Cunningham, director of the Middle College National Consortium. She recommends allowing a year to make arrangements with a local college, select students, designate faculty, and design the curriculum.
To help the Middle College National Consortium to learn about students' perspectives on the transition to college, the National Center for Restructuring Education, Schools and Teaching (NCREST) conducted two focus groups with 13th grade students at two Middle College-Early College high schools.
