Davey, better known as the executive director of NADF, brings more than 35 years of experience in First Nation business and economic development.
The Nishnawbe Aski Development Fund (NADF) held its 15th annual Nishnawbe Aski Nation Business Awards in Timmins on Oct.
Announced in late January, Davey moves up from his position as NADF's special initiatives advisor in the not-for-profit organization's resource services department.
As part of his duties with the NADF, Dennis became involved in the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce where he worked to create a bridge between First Nation and non-Native businesses.
The first place winner, his or her parents and teacher will receive an expense-paid trip to Nebraska City, NE, where they will participate in the National Awards Weekend in addition to receiving a $1000 savings bond mid a lifetime membership in the NADF. The winning student's teacher will receive $200 for classroom materials.
Last year's event in Timmins attracted 150 attendees, with this year's gathering and trade show expected to exceed 200, plus 300 more for the 22nd annual NADF Business Awards on Oct.
Colleen Martin, senior executive assistant of NADF, and Royden Potvin, manager of Thunder Bay Ventures, explained how and why this first joint venture by the two organizations came about.
A fund of $20,000 was created by matching contributions from Lac Seul's Obishikokaang Development Fund and NADF to establish a peer-lending circle.-
"If we had room and others showed an interest, they weren't turned away," said Kimberley Bird, senior business development advisor with NADF. "The way the program was set up was to eliminate barriers for the participants.
NADF named her Businesswoman of the Year in both 2000 and 2001.
Brian Davey, NADF strategic initiatives advisor, said the two-day mining ready summit attracted a full house of participants and included representatives of mining companies, their suppliers, and First Nations groups.
"We helped him out but the bulk of the lifting was done by Darcy and his wife," said Harvey Yesno, president of NADF, based in Thunder Bay.
