Following the Crown Forest Sustainability Act, criteria for emulating natural disturbance patterns during harvesting were set out in the Forest Management Guide for Natural Disturbance Pattern Emulation (NDPEG) (Government of Ontario, MNR 2002).
Some participants responded to critiques by suggesting that environmental groups were "cherry-picking" specific parts of the original MNR NDPEG guidelines and exaggerating their perceived consequences, such as critics' concerns that large areas of 10,000 hectares would be harvesting to emulate large fires in the guise of satisfying caribou habitat needs.
Ontario's NDPEG, and Stand and Landscape Guides arose from the Class Environmental Assessment process and the Crown Forest Sustainability Act, both of which resulted from public demands for healthy forest ecosystems and sustainable forestry practices.
