The unique game attracted a large crowd and it was the home supporters who ended up the happier as they witnessed Hetton hang on to their NEPL
status for another season.
That meant a play-off was necessary between the bottom NEPL
team and the side finishing runners-up in the DCL.
Weighell hit six fours and a six in an innings of 36 that lasted just 13 balls as the NEPL
attack wilted, Layfield then falling in the final over going for what would have been a staggering century.
The long drawn-out saga of whether Esh Winning would be granted automatic promotion as DCL champions finally came to a close late on Wednesday night when the NEPL
management committee released the following statement: "Following discussions with the club and a ground inspection, the League Management Committee has decided that Esh Winning Cricket Club, the winner of the Durham Cricket League, does not currently meet the League and ground criteria for entry into the North East Premier League.
Despite 92 from 76 balls from Gary Burlinson (Eppleton), 42 from Reece Carr (Sacriston), 41 from Josh Coughlin (Hetton Lyons) and 39 not out from Asher Hart (Durham Academy), the NEPL
were never really in the hunt.
That is in the hands of the NEPL
executive who must come to a decision as to whether Esh meet the promotion criteria.
If the champion club are turned down the team finishing second, provided they meet the grounds and facilities criteria, would go to NEPL
bottom club South Hetton for a play-off match next weekend.

Sunday Division One: Benwell Hill v Stockton.
The club were meeting with the NEPL
executive earlier this week to determine whether they met the ground and facilities criteria necessary for admission, and an announcement is expected this morning ahead of the start of play.
At the time of writing there is still uncertainty around Esh Winning meeting the criteria of the NEPL
to gain promotion.
However, if the NEPL
thought they had got rid of the main thorn in their side they suffered a rude awakening.
