The next day Mulbry defended Chandler's interpretation of the rule, asserting that "[i]t plainly was the intent of the club owners" to protect the eligibility of all high school players, not just those from NFSHSAA schools.
An unnamed club official pointed out that Chandler's interpretation had closed a loophole in the rule: otherwise a club that wished to sign a player before his high school class had graduated could encourage him to transfer from a school that belonged to the NFSHSAA to one that didn't, then could sign him as soon as the transfer became effective.
