The NHSCE is an annual competition intended for the best students in chemistry in each school, and aims to identify and encourage outstanding students in each region of the country.
The NHSCE is also organized in co-operation with the Canadian Chemistry Olympiad (CCO), whose National Selection Examination consists of the same multiple choice questions as the NHSCE as well as five challenging free-response problems.
The examination, scheduled for April 23, 2002, combines the Institute's NHSCE and the CCO Olympiad Selection Examination in a format designed to ensure that those students who are interested in only one competition have an examination similar to those of previous years.
The NHSCE consists of two parts: Part A, a 60-minute, multiple choice test with 25 questions, and Part B, a 90-minute essay examination with three questions, two of which must be answered.
The CCO Olympiad Selection Examination contains the same multiple choice questions as the NHSCE, as well as a section containing challenging free response problems designed to take one and a half hours.
Further information on the NHSCE is available on the CIC Chemical Education Division website at www.kingsu.ab.ca/[sim]chemed/.
