We are working to integrate unmanned systems not only into our vision for Naval Integrated Fire Control-Counter Air (NIFC-CA), but across all distributed detect-to-engage sequences from the seabed to space.
While the goal of this test was to prove the compatibility of these systems within existing NIFC-CA architecture, this future capability will extend the Navy's engagement range to detect, analyze and intercept targets in operational settings.
OPNAV's Surface Warfare Directorate is working to enhance the utility of NIFC-CA. Among the concepts considered is making the Baseline 9 ships less reliant on assets of the carrier strike group by using an organic unmanned aerial vehicle with the necessary data links to provide the tracking and targeting information to the ship's system as a way forward for Aegis in its IAMD role.
Greenert directed the Service to accelerate NIFC-CA's fielding, achieving IOC of Increment 1 with the E-2D in 2014.
While the Baseline 9 cruisers go by the name "air defense cruisers," the Baseline 9 destroyers will be full-up IAMD Aegis ships with both NIFC-CA and BMD capabilities.
"If you were to look at the NIFC-CA concept of operations, it's massive, spread across hundreds of miles," Dorrans said.
These initiatives are centered in the three emerging capabilities and functional areas of Naval Integrated Fire Control--Counter Air (NIFC-CA), Offensive Anti-Surface Warfare (OASuW) and Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations (EMSO).
