In order to understand the performance of MCSST and NLSST algorithms, it would be interesting to study the effect of the air-sea interaction on the atmospheric absorption of infrared radiation, as well as other sources of deviation between the satellite SST and the in situ temperature, such as the "cool skin layer effect" (Minnet, 1991).
It would be desirable to check whether the differences in the mean and the standard deviation between both data-sets would improve after applying the NLSST algorithms and to evaluate the effect of the air-sea interaction and the near-surface vertical temperature structure.
