According to the NMMBA, sharks lose their teeth continuously and grow new, sharper ones better-suited for hunting.
The team that cares for the sharks collects teeth that have fallen out, NMMBA said.
caliendrum were collected from Houbihu reef (~5-m depth) on 29 February 2012, 8 d after the new moon, and returned to NMMBA where they were placed in separate aquaria exposed to screened sunlight.
Corals were transported to NMMBA and placed in a 1050-1 flow-through aquarium receiving filtered seawater (50 [micro]m) and maintained at about 28[degrees]C for 5 d to acclimate to laboratory conditions.
Mean ambient [N[H.sub.4.sup.+]] in FSW supplied by the seawater system of NMMBA was 2.19 [+ or -] 0.56 [micro]-mol N[H.sub.4.sup.+] [l.sup.-1] ([+ or -] SE, n = 7), and bubbling seawater during the excretion assay reduced mean ambient [N[H.sub.4.sup.+]] in control beakers by 0.24 [micro]mol N[H.sub.4.sup.+] [l.sup.-1] ([+ or -] SE, n = 8), equivalent to a 20% reduction in ambient [N[H.sub.4.sup.+]] during the assay.
The chambers were plumbed into the seawater system of the NMMBA aquaria and laboratory, which provided a continual flow of "fresh" seawater.
We thank the Director of NMMBA, Lee-Shing Fang, for the opportunity to work at NMMBA and his staff for their excellent cooperation, particularly Chao-Yuan Chung for assistance in the wet laboratory.
Holbrook (USA) for initiating this collaboration, and the staff and students at the National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium (NMMBA) who contributed greatly to all aspects of the success of this work.
