In the landmark National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABBP) P-1 study, tamoxifen therapy reduced the risk of invasive breast cancer by 49% and the risk of noninvasive breast cancer by 50% [J Nat Cancer Inst 1998;90: 1371-1388].
"We need to be careful and not jump to the conclusion that raloxifene reduced breast cancer by 76% and that the NSABBP showed a 49% reduction with tamoxifen, so that means raloxifene is better than tamoxifen," said Dr Goldstein.
