The US-based Climate Prediction Centre of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said earlier this month it expects activitty to be higher than usual this season, with 10 to 17 named storms, including five to nine hurricanes.
The number of predicted storms is also greater with NOAA now expecting 10 to 17 named storms (winds of 39 mph or greater), of which five to nine will become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or greater), including 2-4 major hurricanes (winds of 111 mph or greater).
According to the Weather Company, the five storms being forecast would make 2018 a record breaking one for turbulent weather with eight named storms.
NOAA earlier predicted nine to thirteen named storms (with wind speeds of 39 mph or higher), four to seven of which would have turned into hurricanes (wind speeds of 74 mph or greater).
Only 25 of 1,007 named storms in the eastern Pacific since 1949 have matched or surpassed Hector's strength, according to Michael Lowry, a strategic planner at FEMA and formerly a meteorologist.
A RECORD 13 named storms are set to batter Britain this autumn and winter, forecasters have warned.
President and CEO Steve Kean said, "We had a solid third quarter, especially in the face of multiple named storms, including a historic rainfall event associated with Hurricane Harvey.
If the forecast is correct, the two named storms would be the first in October to hit the country.
Meteorologists say the country could be hit by as many as seven named storms before Christmas.
Just three named storms hit before Christmas in 2016, one more than in 2015 - the first year UK storms were named.
