In addition to the waggonways there are a number of cycle routes in North Tyneside including three national cycling routes - the Reivers Cycle Route, Hadrian's Cycle Way and North Sea Cycle Route
Philip Chisholm, who co-ordinates Sustrans volunteer ranger group in Redcar and Cleveland, said: "It's great news that the North Sea Cycle Route
has come as Redcar and Cleveland, our area, has been missing out on one of the great cycle routes in Europe.
So last year he set out to tackle the world's longest signposted bike path, the 6,000-mile North Sea Cycle route
passing through Holland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and the UK.
David Simper, of Bohun Street, Tile Hill, joined 20 other cyclists on the Scottish leg of the 6,000km North Sea Cycle Route
THE NORTH SEA CYCLE ROUTE
This coastal cycle heads east along routes 10 and 72 to North Shields Fish Quay where you can choose to catch the Shields Ferry South across the Tyne or travel north along the beautiful seafront to Whitley Bay and onto Northumberland.
The Euro-funded North Sea Cycle Route
is the world's longest signed international cycling trail, but the only urban area where there is no coastal cycleway is in North Tyneside.
The former design engineer set off on Sunday from the Tees Barrage for the North Sea cycle route
which includes Edinburgh, Orkney, the Shetland Isles, Norway and Sweden.
This is the only section of the route absent, as well as being the final missing section of the 4,000-mile North Sea Cycle Route
It also means Whitley Bay can also play its part as the final section of the 4,000-mile international North Sea Cycle Route
Speakers at a conference in Newcastle said the area could benefit from European tourists on the North Sea Cycle Route
Two rides were taking place for the anniversary of the North Sea Cycle Route
and finishing with a picnic in Gateshead's Baltic Square.
Stephen said: "The North Sea Cycle Route
is a very exciting project and people have completed the whole trail in three to four months or it can be enjoyed for shorter breaks.
