As an indication of the close similarity between Roro and Mekeo in this regard, the oaoa names of many Roro clubhouses were the same as those of some Mekeo clans (1910:226).
That the use of the analogous notion, oaoa, among the closely-related Roro immediately after contact was being used to refer to virtually any customary activity, had 'a wider significance to the native mind, and [was] sometimes applied to a large group of customs distinguishing one set of people from another' (Seligmann 1910:207, emphasis added) implies that the narrower focus of Seligmana's and the missionaries' accounts may have overlooked a more generalised analogous practice among Mekeo.
