The scope of work involves the dredging of the channel from the Odaw Onyasia confluence at Caprice in Accra, through Avenor, Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, and the Agbogbloshie-South Kaneshie Drain (the Upper and Lower Lagoon).
However, the challenges, notwithstanding, would take about six months to completely clean the Odaw, but the Korle Lagoon would take a longer time to desilt.
Ametepey informed the President of the beautification component of the project that involves the landscaping and the construction of world-class tourism attractions on the immediate environs of the Odaw River and Korle Lagoon to revive that ecosystem and prevent people from defaecating or throwing waste in the drains.
Also towards the north eastern part of the city, it is observed that the drains of "Madina Maye Hot" like that of Haatso are all tributitaries of the Odaw main drain.
The Achimota community lies on the main Odaw River.
Odaw and Onyasia be made pending receipt of funds for actual concrete works.
With Wednesday's heavy downpour flooding the central parts of Accra, especially the Odaw River Basin, Ghanaians are going to heave a sigh of relief with this announcement coming from the Breton Woods Institution.
This is the reason why The Chronicle is happy with the timely approval of $200 million by the World Bank to tackle the problem in the Odaw Basin.
The project focuses on the Odaw river basin in the first phase and will be expanded to other priority basins within the GAR in subsequent phases, supporting a gradual improvement of integrated flood risk management.
The GARID project will directly benefit dense urban settlements and substantial economic activities located downstream of the confluence between the Odaw and the Onyasia streams through the development of upstream flood retention ponds, performance-based dredging in the Odaw river's main channel and tributaries, and rehabilitation of selected drainage channels and bridges.
Wise Ametefe, assured President Akufo-Addo that the dredging of the Odaw River will be completed in 18 days' time, to which the President responded, 'I will come back in 18 days to check.'
He also told President Akufo-Addo that the dredging works are not limited to the Odaw River only, but to the Korle Lagoon and to the estuary.
