To determine overall effects of browsing on alpha diversity in woody plant communities, we calculated Shannon diversity indices for woody species <2.5 m in the EBP and OGDA and tested the null hypothesis of no difference in the measures with bootstrapping using the R statistical language (R Development Core Team, 2013).
EBP (H' = 3.00) and the OGDA (H' = 3.03) did not differ significantly in Shannon diversity (bootstrapped t = 0.025, P = 0.68).
Stem heights varied significantly across sites ([F.sub.3,19] = 4.4, P = 0.016), with Quercus and Cornus stems lower in the EBP than in the OGDA (Ps < 0.036).
"The BIA cannot wish away this part of its trust responsibility," says Tom Goldtooth of the Indigenous Environmental Network which has been giving support to OGDA
. "Ultimate disposition of nuclear waste is central to the question of whether the Indian land base will be preserved for the long term.
