FDA's Office of Nutritional Products, Labeling and Dietary Supplements (ONPLDS) has seen its staff cut from 100 to 45 over the last decade, says CSPI, which is calling on Congress and the Bush administration to phase-in an additional $30 million so that ONPLDS can hire 300 new employees for its headquarters and field staff over the next three years.
Heller notes that ONPLDS has been assigned major new responsibilities such as regulating functional foods containing herbal medicines, setting standards for the labeling of genetically engineered ingredients and monitoring health claims on the Internet.
The office is now organized by product categories to better align and coordinate staff activities and to make ONPLDS more identifiable to the agency's stakeholders.
