The relationship between optic nerve sheath diameter ONSD and EICP is established by a few researches in the past.
Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used for the diagnostic performance of BT for the prediction of increased ONSD. Based on ROC analysis, the best statistical cut-off value was calculated.

In order to reduce the variability of measurements, the ONSD was measured three times in each eye and the mean values were calculated.
Primary research by Hansen and Helmke showed a correlation between rising cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure and ONSD [1].
Ultrasound devices are nowadays widely available in ICUs, but while Transcranial Doppler sonography for the identification of cerebral circulatory arrest requires trained and skilled sonographers, ONSD evaluation, to early detect the optic nerve sheath swelling in cases of intracranial hypertension, may be performed with minimal training and, above all, noninvasively [20, 21].
Our group has previously suggested the significance of combined measurements of the Doppler derived pulsatility index (PI) in the middle cerebral artery (MCA) and ONSD recordings as surrogate measures of ICP in patients with TBI [4, 5].
There is a strong correlation between the eyeball transverse diameter (ETD) and ONSD that can be presented as ONSD/ETD index [8].
However, non-invasive screening tests like ONSD measurement with ultrasound may be useful in selected cases of acute traumatic brain injury.
In this study, we compared ONSD measured by the application of the new quality criteria to invasive ICP evaluated simultaneously by intraparenchymal catheter in intensive care unit (ICU) patients with severe TBI.
