This study provided preliminary data on the relationships between identity development within the framework of OTAID, universal-diverse orientation and self-reported multicultural competencies as measured by the MCKAS (Ponterotto et al., 2002).
In OTAID (Myers et al., 1991; Sevig et al., 2000) Phase 1 is associated with a lack of awareness of any view of self other than the view to which the person is initially socialized.
If lower MCKAS Awareness reflects a subtle Eurocentric bias and identity development at a less advanced level in terms of the OTAID, then the importance of identifying effective training methods to best facilitate awareness, identity development and comfort with differences as a foundation for counseling seems evident.
