These propeptides--procollagen-1 C-terminal propeptide (P1CP) and procollagen-1 N-terminal propeptide (P1NP)-can be measured in plasma and are considered markers of bone formation (4).
Several studies investigating bone turnover markers in OI have reported that, compared with normal individuals, patients with OI have relatively low plasma concentrations of P1CP (6-9), which is believed to reflect the defective synthesis of type 1 collagen in OI.
The likely explanation is that in type I OI the production of normal type 1 collagen is approximately halved (hence the low P1NP and P1CP) but no abnormal collagen is produced.
