Six additional serotypes found in PCV13, but not PCVT, now account for 97% of all penicillin-nonsusceptible IPD under the new break points and 83% of penicillin-nonsusceptible IPD under the old break points, he said.
Added to the schedule since 2000 are pneumococcal 7-valent conjugate vaccine (PCVT) at 2, 4, 6, and 12 months; influenza vaccine at 6 and 7 months, then annually to all patients up to 5 years and to 50% of 6- to 21-year-olds; meningococcal polysaccharide conjugate (MCV4) vaccine and tetanus/diphtheria toxoid/acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccine at 11 years; hepatitis A vaccine at 18 and 24 months; rotavirus vaccine at 2, 4, and 6 months; 3 human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines to girls at 11 years; and a second varicella vaccine at 5 years.
Following the announcement, the committee then voted on recommendations for routine use of the 13-valent vaccine in previously unvaccinated children aged 2-59 months of age--with the routine primary series given at 2, 4, 6, and 12-15 months of age--and in high-risk children aged 60-71 months, as well as on guidelines for transitioning to PCV13 in children who previously received one or more doses of PCVT.
Overall, the immune responses to the concomitant antigens for a three-dose infant series were similar between a group of 266 healthy 2-month-olds who were randomized to receive PCV13 and 263 who received PCVT. The infants were vaccinated at 2, 3, and 4 months of age, and blood samples were taken at 5 months to measure immune response.
