Antimitochondrial autoantibodies (AMAs) to the E2 subunit of the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC-E2
) are serological hallmarks of PBC, which were detected in 95% of patients with PBC [50-52].
It is likely that their activation occurs via release of E2 subunit mitochondrial pyruvate dehydrogenase autoantigen (PDC-E2
) during apoptosis of biliary epithelial cells (BECs) [23, 24].
It has already been reported that with ELISA techniques, the choice among recombinant PDC-E2
(10), commercially purified PDC (11), and in-house-purified PDC (12) could influence the results obtained for anti-M2 antibodies.
