In early February 2010, the government and PEEGT launched a search for technical consultants to work on Syria's first independent power producer (IPP) - a 220-250MW plant to be built in Nassserieh, north-east of Damascus.
Under the 25-year build, own and operate (BOO) deal, the MPMR would provide fuel free of charge to run the power plant, with PEEGT to buy and distribute the electricity.
The government confirmed its support for the project in December 1997, but negotiations about the tariff have been dragging on between the PEEGT and SPIC.
