The Psychological Need Satisfaction in Exercise (PNSE) scale was originally developed by Wilson, Rogers, Rodgers, and Wild (2006).
Pearson correlations were used to examine variable associations between physical activity (IPAQ) and psychological need satisfaction (PNSE) among adults' who primarily participated in team or individual sports in high school.
The PNSE uses 18 items, six to evaluate each of the needs: competence (e.g., "I am confident about doing the most challenging exercises"), autonomy (e.g., "I believe I can make decisions in my physical education classes") and relatedness (e.g., "I can relate to my classmates because they accept me as I am ").
Considering this necessity, two independent research groups developed instruments specifically designed for the purpose of evaluating the BPN in the exercise context, namely the Psychological Need Satisfaction in Exercise Scale (PNSE: Wilson, Rogers, Rodgers, & Wild, 2006) and the Basic Psychological Needs in Exercise Scale (BPNES: Vlachopoulos & Michailidou, 2006).
In this sense, Wilson, Rogers, Rodgers, and Wild (2006) developed a scale to measure these needs in physical exercise called the Psychological Needs Satisfaction in Exercise Scale (PNSE), using a sample of 426 Canadian university students.
