Precoordinate indexing systems--classification schemes like the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) (Dewey, 1996), Universal Decimal Classification (UDC, 1985), and Colon Classification (CC) (Ranganathan, 1965), and so on that use artificial notations or subject indexing systems such as relational indexing (Farradane, 1980a, 1980b), PRECIS (Austin & Dykstra, 1984), and POPSI (Bhattacharyya, 1981) that use natural language terms --represent the content of an information resource by synthesizing the various components of the subject and organizing these in a specific order.
