Poui agreed the new depot would be beneficial to all sides.
"It is a project that our communities are obliged to manage," said Poui. "We have been convinced that this depot is in no way against our community's best interests."
"This will mean less costs and lower rubbish collection charges," said Poui. "The rubbish will be a lot easier to transport."
The other finalists for this prize--Blue Hour by Carolyn Forche, The Blaze of the Poui
by Mark McMorris, Otherhood by Reginald Shepherd, and Blindsight by Rosmarie Waldrop--do these things as well.
And of all of his published writings, none addresses these key questions with the unsettling power and clarity of his newest book, The Blaze of the Poui. As a collection of poems, The Blaze of the Poui pours a startling array of voices into an ongoing investigation of eros and exploration in the European and African settlement of the New World.
And one of the best ways to approach The Blaze of the Poui lies through the challenges and pleasures of its author's earlier poems.
Here, however, they can be touched upon in a manner that helps us to grasp the increasingly subtle and complex poems that make up The Blaze of the Poui. McMorris's first chapbook, "Palinurus Suite" (1992), takes Aeneas's fallen helmsman, Palinurus, as its subject.
The Blaze of the Poui begins with a series of epigraphs that outline the scope and purpose of McMorris's book.
In The Blaze of the Poui, McMorris cultivates a series of images: gold flowers, the golden sun, antique machines made of gold, and gold as a precious metal.
The last long poem in McMorris's book is entitled "The Blaze of the Poui: An Epithalamion." The language of this piece is formal, even stilted and antiquated: Tell me in faith, Love, what is a wedding?
The change of the seasons leads to the yellow flowering of the poui. Opposed to this cyclical flowering is the awkward mechanical turning of the golden orrery, an eighteenth-century device that represents the solar system.
