Five data sources were used to generate a master list of dry cleaners in King County: 1) a database of dry cleaning establishments visited by the Local Hazardous Waste Management Program in King County (LHWMP) before 2002; 2) a list of dry cleaners currently receiving technical assistance from LHWMP; 3) a Washington State Department of Revenue list of dry cleaners; 4) a PSCAA
list of active (i.e., PERC-using) dry cleaners; and 5) a commercial InfoUSA directory, restricted to businesses located in King County with North American Industry Classification System code 81232 (drycleaning & laundry services [except coin-operated]).
We did not examine other criteria pollutants (ozone, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and lead) because there were too few monitoring sites to construct exposure models (PSCAA 2007).
We also evaluated year and month of conception as confounders because of temporal changes in both pollutant concentrations and preeclampsia risk (PSCAA 2007; Rudra and Williams 2005).
The difference between distributions of observed CO concentrations and participants' predicted exposures was due primarily to the fact that CO monitoring was more pervasive in the earlier years of the study (PSCAA 2007).
