(4) In 2006, Herry Zudianto (Partai Amanat Nasional [PAN, National Mandate Party]) and Haryadi Suyuti (Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan [PDI-P, Indonesian Democratic Party--Struggle) ran and were elected as mayor and vice-mayor of Yogyakarta City.
He moved to Pontianak in 1979 and began his relationship with the Indonesian Democracy Party (Partai Demokrasi Indonesia, PDI).
In the general elections of the Soeharto period (1971, 1977, 1982, 1987, 1992, 1997) the people of Kotagede voted for all three of the political parties that contested them: the Unity Development Party (Partai Persatuan Pembangunan, PPP), an alliance of Islamic political parties, the ruling party Golkar (Golongan Karya) and the Indonesian Democratic Party (Partai Demokrasi Indonesia, PDI) (Zaidan 2003).
For our purposes, the most important pair of candidates was Dewanti Rumpoko and Punjul Santoso, who were supported by PDI-P (Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan, Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle).
For the national parliament, Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan (PDI-P, Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, led by Megawati Soekarnoputri) won 34% of the vote; Golkar ("Functional Groups" party) 22%; Partai Kebangkitan Bangsa (PKB, National Awakening Party, linked to the conservative Islamic organization Nadhlatul Ulama headed by former President Abdurrahman Wahid) 13%; and Partai Persatuan Pembangunan (PPP, United Development Party, led by Hamzah Haz) 11%.

His own party, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan, PDIP), also expressed deep dissatisfaction with his leadership.
Abdurrahman Wahid, head of Nadhlatul Ulama, Indonesia's largest Muslim organization, called for an "anti-UN Jihad" while Megawati Sukarnoputri, head of Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan (PDI-P), the party which gained the most votes in the June 1999 elections, argued that the international community should halt their demonization of the Indonesian people.
Two other parties, namely the Partai Persatuan Pembangunan (PPP, Development Unity Party) and the Partai Demokrasi Indonesia (PDI, Indonesian Democratic Party), were forced to accept a minor role.
In the last few days of the campaign, religion and related issues made a presence with the Islamic-oriented parties accusing the Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan (PDIP) of being anti-Islamic for fielding a majority of non-Muslim candidates.
Indeed, he was not brought down by the political parties, though certainly the victimization of Megawati Soekarnoputri and her branch of the Partai Demokrasi Indonesia played a part in discrediting the regime.
Perjuangan has acquired the status of a keyword in Bahasa Indonesia that finds no easy equivalent in English, making it difficult to translate the name of the victorious political party in the 1999 general election, Partai Demokrasi Indonesia -- Perjuangan (Indonesian Democratic Party -- Struggle).
